favorite phrase of the day

While this isn’t from my current work in progress, I still like it. Reading over it, it made me laugh, and I wanted to share it.

As they stood there talking quietly, Jeremy burst into the vestibule from the church. “I’m sorry,” he said, a bit flustered. “Are we ready back here?”

Sami took a deep breath. She couldn’t be more ready. She had everything. Something old. She wore her mother’s never-worn wedding rings on her right hand. Something new. A brand new 1989 penny lay beneath her foot in her right shoe. Something borrowed. Petra had loaned her an old, handmade crocheted lace handkerchief. Something blue. She blushed thinking about the lacy baby blue lingerie beneath her gown. “Yes,” she said. “We’re ready.”

Destiny yanked on her father’s tuxedo jacket. “Daddy, I want to go with you.”

While he knelt to speak to his daughter, Sami looked up at her own father. “I know how she feels,” she said.

“You always have,” [he] said, smiling.

She knew he resisted the urge to ruffle her hair. On tiptoe, she kissed his cheek. “I love you,” she said.

“I love you.”

“Enough love,” Jeremy announced. “It’s time.” Before Sami could do or say anything, he stooped to kiss her full on the mouth, not caring whether he marred what little make-up she wore.

Petra and the ushers snickered.
