meet charlie

I let Kathy take Charlie home with her either not long after we moved here in September 2008 or around the time of the ice storm the following January 2009. I’ve had Charlie since I lived in Richmond from 1992 to 1995 – I’m not sure exactly when I bought him, but he lived in the bathroom in my Village Square apartment. When I moved out, I had to throw 98% of him away. He’d grown around and around and around the bathroom from his pot on the top of the toilet tank. He thrived in Harlan County from 1995 to 1999. He lived with us on Richmond Road and came with us to Tates Creek in 2005. By the time Kathy took him, I pretty much had decided that he had just come to the end of his life and it was time to let him go. He was down to three or four tiny leaves and lived in a tiny pot.

Well, earlier this afternoon, Kathy snapped this picture with her cell phone and sent it to me. I didn’t recognize Charlie! I hope to bring him back home soon.

Does anybody know how long these plants live with proper love and care? I have two out on the patio that have pieces of variegated that belonged to Mommy that I got clippings of when she passed away in July 2000. I have no idea how long she had had them. But I hope to have them just as long as I’ve had Charlie.

ETA: I’ve been corrected. He’s a pothos, not a philodendron.
