Today Freddie Mercury would have turned 65 years old. I was in the fourth grade when Another One Bites the Dust was popular; I can still kinda remember part of the words and the actions to a cheer the high school cheerleaders did to the song at the time (heck, it’s probably the whole thing). But I’ll never forget that day in November 1991 when Kurt Loder came on to MTV to announce that Mercury had died. Thomas, just shy of 25 months, was playing in the other room, and Tayler, just shy of 7 months, was on my lap on the living room floor. And I just sat there and cried myself dry.
Mercury, you are sorely missed. So much talent. So much genius. Lost to us. Bohemian Rhapsody is your opus, sir.
It’s too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body’s aching all the time
Goodbye everybody – I’ve got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooo – (anyway the wind blows)
I don’t want to die
I sometimes wish I’d never been born at all…
